[She does actually understand that. Friendship is a valuable gift. Standing beside a friend, going against one's supposed "purpose" is a blessing, too.]
A witch, then? I take it that whatever you could do before, you can now not? My own retainer lost access to his magic, and we both lost our ability to tap into our Crests.
No I cannot. [They look down at their feet on the ground.] All my abilities are gone.
[Maybe the worst thing is that they've lost their connection with the earth beneath their feet. Because their feet are on that ground, but the ground does not tell them anything anymore. It is just...the ground. Just dirt.]
So I take you are still able to use the abilities you had? Except for your Crest, that is?
[Enkidu thinks they aren't going to become much of a witch. They are good at what they are created for. A weapon made to match the strength of a god.]
My abilities are all tied to my purpose. And I seem to have lost that.
[They have to find a new purpose here and they figure it is not going to be easy. This isn't Chaldea or the woods close to Uruk. There is no Grail and there are no gods that need to be defied.]
A tool she does not like. Though, going into the why is a touch personal for the moment.]
However, in my world, society is based around Crests. Those with Crests make decisions and hold power and sway. Think of them as marks of status. The war I was involved with...the war I started...was to reforge our society into a world where merit and not Crests they were fortunate enough to be born with determines the worth of a person.
Have you replaced your own Crest? [That seems a logic thing to do. Otherwise humans might think nothing has changed and things are still the same. And wars are never pleasant. Humans can be very violent and stubborn. They can say this and do the opposite.] Or merely refused to use it?
[She continues her easy steps, falling into a simple pattern of them.]
My home nation, Adrestia, is the southernmost of what was once three nations. The Adrestian Empire now encompasses the whole of Fodlan, as of my victory in the war.
[A truth.]
It's temperate, warm summers and cooler, milder winters. Lots of farmland, with a thriving coastal trade. It is not so different from this world, to tell the truth. Untainted, of course. The people of the Empire are a hardly lot. Hardworking and industrious, taking advantage of the milder climate. Once I return home and institute my reforms, it will be different. Anyone with talent and drive to succeed will be able to, regardless of birth.
I know it may sound strange, as an Emperor. But I intend to institute a meritocratic system of government. And nothing could make me happier.
That surely sounds like a beautiful place. And one that you love a lot. I am certain that the people of Adrestia can tell that as well. I knew my first impression of you was correct, you are not only a ruler but also someone who loves her people.
[Loves them and prioritizes their happiness and wellbeing over the outdated systems for noblemen? She was smarter than most royalty Marie knew, including herself]
[Oh. How exactly should she approach this question? Marie briefly wonders how someone like Edelgard would comment on her leadership skills. Ah well, she had no regrets]
I was born in Vienna, in Austria and traveled to France to marry the heir to the throne. I grew to love my new home and the people of France loved me as their Queen. I loved them back and I did what I could for their sake. However, they eventually... became dissatisfied with monarchy.
[Edelgard smiles gently, gaze returning to the lights spilling from the doors as she turns to lean against the railing.]
It is a tough rowdier than any formal gathering I've ever attended. But that seems to be the nature of the Mirrorbound. We are a varied lot.
[She's not bothered by the thought, really. Variety is the spice of life.]
The Academy was the last time I attended such a party, and we were all so young. And excited, too, to have such a formal gathering. I think maybe it's different now, that we are older.
Varied is quite the word! [ An amused huff follows, trying to smile through her own reservations on this whole mess. The dancing, the music, the drinking – all far more free than she was use to, she realizes. This is how she wishes her people would be, at the sacrifice of her own leisure. ] I've never seen any celebration of this sort, even at my wedding.
[ Edelgard speaks of formals, she speaks of her own – unfortunately, both found in youth. She doesn't linger on the topic, listening to the Emperor's words more keenly. ]
Different... [ She has to ask: ] In a better way, with experience? ...Or..?
[Wedding...huh. Edelgard files that away for later.]
I think that it's better here in some ways. Because it is genuine, mostly. The people here are happy, and not pretending to be.
In my world, at the Winter Ball, things were tense at times. The world was heading down the path to war, and it was sort of the last gasp of an attempt at peace.
But here, my classmates are either scarred by war, or not present at all. So, I feel their absence more keenly this night.
I see. [ It feels tense to her, but perhaps Edelgard holds more optimism than her. Dany didn't agree with it at first — it felt as if they were ignoring the problems at hand. Now, with the ravishing music and laughs... it was as she said: truly happy people, not pretend. ] Then... the solution is to enjoy in their honor. Enjoy as they would.
[Edelgard relaxes easily enough, the cover of the blanket helping keep her from shifting and squirming. Her heart begins to hammer in her chest as Corrin presses down atop her, the slight weight of her bonded a welcome heat against the fabric she has armored herself against the outside world with.
The kiss became her whole world for several blissful moments. She sucked in a breath, then let her teeth catch Corrin's lip slightly, mindful of not biting with her canines. Playfully, she even nibbled a bit before finally sliding back. Her slightly swollen lip courtesy of the prolonged intimate touch, grazes Corrin's cheek a little, and she speaks up in a hoarse whisper.]
If this goes much farther, I should like to retire to somewhere more private. I...do like the idea of continuing.
[She looks up into Corrin's eyes, cheeks flushed, stomach burning with the drink.]
Have you learned to teleport yet? Or should we begin walking before we cause a scene?
Corrin was far too lost in the moment to really take into account where the moment was, so caught up in the warmth of Edelgard's body against hers, the feel of her strong hands on her body, the way her lips moved with each little shift in the kiss. Even that playful bite wasn't enough to really pull her from it, though it did elicit a soft, startled little noise that even she wasn't sure was good or bad.
So when Edelgard pulled back, she made a unhappy noise in the back of her throat, her head falling forward slightly, her breath a bit ragged. Her red eyes were turned upward enough to watch Edelgard's face, and when her words finally pushed past the haze of giddiness and excitement, a surprised little giggle slipped out.
"We are...kind of in the wrong place for this, aren't we." She agreed, a sheepish grin tugging at the corner of her lips. Okay. Right. Definitely the wrong place and they were going to have to walk all the way back and...
Teleport. She could do that now! She'd learned it, and she had her new temporary tattoo that could help her with it. And that was so much better than walking because she did not want to move from Edelgard's lap, not for anything. Admittedly, she hadn't tried to do it with someone else but...she was sure she could. Right then, she was sure of anything as long as it meant not moving more than an inch from her bonded.
Her excitement started to ramp up again, and she leaned forward to whisper against Edelgard's lips.
"Close your eyes."
And then she pressed the kiss in again, gathering up a bit of courage, before her grip on Edelgard tightened and she focused on her magic, murmuring a soft word. With a swirl of energy and a crackle and pop, they were gone!
Only to appear in the middle of Edelgard's room a moment later. Corrin's aim was great! Well. Good. Because while she had been aiming for the edge of Edelgard's bed, instead they wound up in the middle of the room, nothing to support them. Corrin let out a startled half-shout as she realized it, a split second before they went collapsing onto the rug.
Corrin's excitement is easily refracted into Edelgard, though the understanding of what's happening is still a bit foggy. She had no idea what to do in this sort of situation, but her nervousness washes away like the tide as her caught the whiff of courage her bondmate had gathered.
She was so much more confident, and even if she was a little bit of a scatterbrained idiot at times, it was good for Edelgard, and she knew it.
"Of course."
Closing her eyes, she allowed herself to relax into the kiss and forget what was about to happen. The familiar lurch of instantaneously changing locations wasn't jarring, but the floor rushing to greet her is. Gripping Corrin tight so she didn't fall hard, the stocky emperor curled her back and landed as softly as one can...with the blanket sliding off to partially cover them.
Spluttering slightly, she shook her head and blinked up at Corrin.
Even with Edelgard holding her, Corrin's knees still smacked into the ground and she let out a stuttered groan as the sharp pain, burying her face in the older woman's shoulder to muffle a startled cry. But only for a second, because honestly this was pretty funny, and even knee smacks were funny in a funny-bone sort of way.
Edelgard's words pulled a giggle out of her, muffled against her neck, and she just stayed like that for a good thirty seconds, trying to collect herself as the pain faded. Finally she set her hands on either side of Edelgard's head and pushed herself up into a half-sitting position, her hair falling down over one side of her head like a curtain as she grinned down at the emperor she was now sitting on.
"Sorry for the rough landing," she said with a grin, still giggling softly. Oh this had gone from intense to ridiculous but she did not mind at all. And her actual desire hadn't faded either, it was just mixing in with the laughter.
Edelgard really didn't mind, not so long as they were safe and sound and well out of sight of any prying eyes. Looking up at her Bonded with a lopside smile, giggling very softly under her breath, the Emperor allowed herself to consider the implications of what was going on.
She was very likely about to engage in something that would be considered a scandal at home. But that didn't matter very much to her, not in the face of Corrin's smile. She felt her desire, and understood that it was all directed at her. The point, it seemed, had been well proven. Corrin really did think she was pretty, and while Edelgard didn't know what to make of that, she knew what she wanted to do about it.
Pushing herself up on her elbows, she brought her lips up to Corrin's neck, kissing it gently.
"So long as the rest of our evening remains gentle, I shan't mind at all."
